A student's death at Franklin High in Highland Park draws a wide audience to FOX 11
A longer report on the same campus followed, and on the next night the station covered the vigil for the 18-year-old.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 137,082 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (7,643).
Student dies after falling from school building
A short FOX 11 Los Angeles report on a student who died after falling from the fourth floor of a building at Franklin High School passed 144,000 views in its first day. A new short on the channel usually opens with fewer than 8,000, so this one drew close to eighteen times its usual audience.
The report says a death investigation is underway at the Los Angeles Unified campus in Highland Park, a neighborhood in northeast Los Angeles.
The station returned to the story the same day with a longer piece. Its description says the 18-year-old student died after a fight and a fall from a fourth-floor balcony on Wednesday afternoon. That second report also ran far ahead of the channel's usual start. On Thursday night, FOX 11 filmed the vigil held for the student.
The comment section under the first report filled more than a hundred times faster than usual. Much of the discussion is about bullying in schools and how adults on campus respond to violence between students.
