A fatal Mississauga hit-and-run leads CTV's noon newscast past 40,000 views on CP24
The charge against a 69-year-old Hamilton man is on pace for more than eleven times the channel's usual first day, and a 407 toll fraud report also ran far ahead.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 78,362 views a day, 12 times a normal first day on this channel (6,804).
Hamilton man charged following fatal hit-and-run | CTV News Toronto at Noon for Oct.1, 2026
More than 40,000 people had pressed play nine hours after CP24 posted the October 1 edition of CTV News Toronto at Noon. A full newscast on the channel usually finds closer to 7,000 viewers in its whole first day. This one is heading for more than eleven times that.
The story at the top of the hour is a sad one. A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run in Mississauga late on Tuesday afternoon, and police have charged a 69-year-old Hamilton man with failing to remain at an accident resulting in death. The broadcast's title leads with that charge. A shorter version of the same report from CP24 Live at Five drew about 10,000 views of its own.
The comment section moved faster than usual too. It passed twice a normal full first day within nine hours. Much of the talk is about the crash itself. Several viewers single out another driver who, they say, went after the pickup truck. Others use the space to ask for wider coverage of Toronto's mayoral race.
That race is in the newscast as well. Olivia Chow, listed as a mayoral candidate, has launched a campaign aiming for 7,000 signs. Daily Bread Food Bank explains how rising diesel prices are making it harder to feed people in need. And the rest of the forty minutes covers a lot of ground, from a stunt marking the CN Tower's 50th anniversary to the Leafs' season opener and the winner of Fat Bear Week.
It was not the only CP24 report that traveled. Steve Ryan's story on four arrests in an alleged vehicle registration fraud scheme tied to unpaid 407 tolls also ran several times past the channel's usual start. Together, the two reports pushed CP24's daily views well above their normal level.
