Franklin High, a Catalina crash and a likely super El Niño on KTLA 5

Fifteen uploads went up, and two days of hard local news did most of the drawing.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Two stories from Wednesday shaped KTLA 5's week, and both were about loss.

The busiest new video was the station's short on a student who died after falling from the fourth story of a building at Benjamin Franklin High School in Highland Park, following an altercation inside a classroom. It passed 40,000 views in nine hours. A day later Carlos Saucedo reported from the campus as students returned to class, with a memorial growing outside and new safety concerns among families and staff. The second story came from the water: a medical helicopter went down off Catalina Island on Wednesday evening, and the report on what authorities shared about the victims drew more than 50,000 views in its first five hours.

The rest of the fifteen uploads ran wider. Police arrested a 75-year-old Anaheim woman in the death of a puppy they say was deliberately run over in Santa Ana. Lindsey Pena covered unusual sea life turning up along warm Southern California waters, as forecasters put the odds of a "super" El Niño above 90 percent. And the Do it Live! crew took on a man who drove his SUV through a Kroger entrance because he could not wait for the restroom.

Overall, the channel's daily views ran below their usual level this week, though no other local news station near its size drew more. FOX 9 in Minneapolis-St. Paul is the one having the big week, at more than double its usual pace, while CBS New York and FOX 5 New York are quieter than normal.
