A donkey shed on a steep hill, and soybeans at 19% moisture

Zach Johnson's two uploads move from building a home for donkeys that haven't arrived yet to a harvest held back by wet beans and a rain-filled forecast.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Harvest is almost here. Zach Johnson's two uploads this week sit right on the edge of it, one foot still in summer chores and the other in the combine.

"Kids These Days" opens with the donkey shed, set on what Zach calls the most inconvenient hill he could pick. By the description's account it is leveled, sort of named and missing only the donkeys. The rest is harvest prep: last year's corn moved out of the bins, a sheared bolt in the gooseneck auger (again), grain pits pumped out, and Dad finding a hole with the lawn mower. It drew the bigger crowd of the two, past 350,000 views. The comments are full of mechanics: a whole thread tries to diagnose a noise at the back of the combine, and several viewers suspect a loose belt slapping a shield. Others are already guessing the shed is a gateway, and that goats and alpacas will follow the donkeys.

"Are The Beans Ready Yet?" answers its own title: not quite. The soybeans are running 18 to 19% moisture against the 12 to 13 Zach wants, and the corn sits at 26%. After ten to twelve weeks without rain, the forecast filled up with it just as harvest starts. In between, 12,000 bushels went to the elevator in Glenwood, and the two bean headers turned out not to fit the same combine. Two days younger, it is now the channel's quicker mover.

The channel's overall pace stayed close to its usual level. Among the outdoors and homesteading channels nearest its size, Millennial Farmer had the third-biggest week. Tackle2thePeople had a strong one, while LastBush Survival ran well below its typical pace.

What viewers say

  • Ah you’ve not lived until you fire up the combine for the first time and spit out a raccoon or groundhog that thought it was a good place to get a snack and a nap 😂
  • I hope your dad never retires. Love how you interact when he got stuck. As he drove away he smirked which was funny

  • I’d put money on Zach eventually getting 2-3 goats, llama/alpaca, and a fluffy cow. Donkeys are just the gateway drug😂
