Donald Trump starts gracious and ends defiant within about ten seconds. "Congratulations to the Democrats. They did a good job," he says on the phone to Fox News on election night. Then: "I don't view it as a hit on me." A moment later he describes his record as "the greatest two years in the history of the presidency."
Those lines open "Trump breaks tone to congratulate Democrats on midterm sweep," a three-minute KTVU FOX 2 San Francisco package that passed 2.2 million views in its first six hours. A regular upload on the station usually draws a few thousand views across a whole first day. The comment section moved even faster, with thousands of comments where a typical first day brings a dozen or so.
After the anchors note that Trump, speaking with Bret Baier, does not blame himself, reporter Greg Lee calls the night "a stunning rebuke of President Trump and Republicans." He walks through the Senate map: James Talarico, a Texas state lawmaker, defeating Attorney General Ken Paxton; Adam Hamilton's upset of Roger Marshall in Kansas; Annie Andrews unseating the Republican incumbent in South Carolina.
Michigan is still undecided in this report. A later KTVU upload carries Abdul El-Sayed's victory speech after his win over Mike Rogers.
The Democratic leaders get the closing minutes. Chuck Schumer speaks of "a generational remake of the Senate map" and adds, "And now, Democrats must deliver." Hakeem Jeffries calls it a patriotic moment rather than a partisan one.
The station's broader reports on Democrats taking Congress and Xavier Becerra's full victory speech as California's governor-elect also ran well ahead of its usual pace, though neither came close to the Trump call.
