Idaho had a curious question on its ballot: which gun should be the state's official firearm? Jimmy Kimmel answered it the way campaigns answer everything, with a negative ad. In his midterm monologue, a mock spot goes after the Colt M1911 and ends with a voiceover concluding, "No thanks. Idahoans deserve better."
The broader night gave him plenty of material. With Democrats taking the House, Kimmel opens by putting Guillermo Rodriguez on duty as chief election correspondent, then delivers his verdict on the president's evening: "The only ass on Trump's mind tonight is the one that just got handed to him."
From there he works through Trump and Donald Trump Jr. on the campaign trail, a late-night Trump post about a candidate who had supposedly disappeared, and two on-screen columns. One lists the issues voters say they care about, such as inflation and corruption. The other lists what Kimmel presents as MAGA's concerns, including windmills and testosterone. He also covers the DOJ monitors sent to polling places and Xavier Becerra sidestepping questions about Los Angeles's tight mayoral race.
Near the end, Speaker Mike Johnson gets a tribute reel set to Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You." The send-off is a joke about his expected loss of the gavel, not news of a departure.
The monologue drew about 12 million views in its first day, against a usual first day of under 200,000 for the show's regular videos. Comments arrived roughly 45 times faster than usual. The Daily Show also had a much bigger day than usual, while Colbert's channel stayed near its normal level.
Kimmel's conversation with the Pod Save America hosts passed a million views as well. The monologue, however, closes with something sillier: Natalie, played as Jimmy's assistant, arrives with oversized luggage and describes herself as "a doula, a life coach, a wet nurse."
