Keisha Lance Bottoms pauses her victory celebration to remember Betsy Peek, her enslaved great-great-grandmother. Recalling a visit to Crawfordville, Georgia, she gives her own political milestone a much longer history.
"I know I am standing on shoulders made of steel," she tells supporters.
The former Atlanta mayor defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson to become Georgia's first Black woman governor-elect. WSB-TV's recording of her speech drew roughly 79,000 views in its first day, around nineteen times the station's usual opening-day audience for regular videos.
Her daughter introduces her before Bottoms takes the podium. The speech moves between family thanks and the work she says she intends to do: expand Medicaid, improve healthcare access for veterans, support education and back small business owners and farmers.
Bottoms also says she has spoken with Jackson and thanks him for a hard-fought race. "I will be a governor for all of Georgia," she promises.
For WSB-TV, the story extends beyond the victory stage. A follow-up report visits Frederick Douglass High School, where students are celebrating an alumna's path from their classrooms to the governor's office.
Georgia’s Democratic governor-elect, Bottoms is an attorney who served as mayor of Atlanta from 2018 to 2022.
