"Mathematically, we're not going to be able to win this election," Greg Abbott tells his supporters in WFAA's recording of his concession speech.
After reviewing county results across Texas, Abbott says he called Gina Hinojosa to congratulate her. He also offered assistance to her and her team during the transition, making the handover part of his public acknowledgment of defeat.
The result ends Abbott's bid for a fourth term. Hinojosa, a Democratic state representative, becomes the first challenger to defeat a sitting Texas governor since Ann Richards lost her reelection bid in 1994.
WFAA's upload drew roughly 44,000 views before its first day was over, an unusually large audience for one of the Dallas-Fort Worth station's regular videos.
The speech begins with a musical aside: Abbott tells the crowd that "Free Bird" was his high school graduating class song. He thanks his wife Cecilia and daughter Audrey before reaching the concession itself, less than two minutes into the recording.
Much of what follows is a defense of his years in office. Abbott points to job creation, research universities and teacher pay, then highlights water infrastructure, electrical grid upgrades and border security. His closing remarks return to the state's identity: "Texas was built by the bold."
