Voting wasn't over. Outside a Koreatown polling site, Darsha Philips found long lines still waiting after California's polls closed, giving NBCLA's election special a street-level counterpoint to the calls arriving in the studio.
The broadcast drew roughly 51,000 views in its first day, about sixteen times the channel's usual start for longer videos. Its focus moved between the national Democratic gains, California's next governor and the Los Angeles mayoral contest between Karen Bass and Nithya Raman.
Turnout was central to that local discussion. Analyst Conan Nolan described Raman's campaign as believing a larger turnout would favor her, while Philips's report showed voters still waiting to have their say.
Then came a statewide call: the Decision Desk projected Xavier Becerra as California's next governor. At his Sacramento victory party, reporter Lolita Lopez described an unusual gap between the television announcement and the gathering behind her: "This crowd still does not know what we already know, that he is the projected winner."
The studio discussion drew an important historical distinction. Becerra would be California's first elected Latino governor, rather than its first Latino governor: Romualdo Pacheco held the office in 1875 after succeeding Newton Booth.
Back in Los Angeles County, Keenan Willard reported from the ballot processing center in City of Industry, explaining that extended polling-site lines were delaying the initial results.
