Chris Pappas thanks husband during historic New Hampshire Senate victory speech
Vann gets such a loud reception that Chris Pappas briefly questions which of them should have been the candidate.
"All right, the wrong person was on the ballot, apparently," Pappas jokes after his husband steps forward for a hug and a kiss on the cheek. CBS Boston's short election-night clip captures the exchange, turning a formal victory speech into a public thank-you to the person beside him.
Pappas defeated Republican former senator John Sununu in New Hampshire, winning the seat Democratic incumbent Jeanne Shaheen is leaving. Having represented the state in the House since 2019, he is set to become the first openly gay man to serve in the Senate.
The clip drew roughly 53,000 views in its first day, more than twenty times the usual first-day audience for CBS Boston's Shorts.
At the podium, Pappas makes clear that his gratitude isn't dependent on the election result: "Tonight, win, lose, or draw, I'm the luckiest guy because I'm married to a man that I love." He closes the excerpt by saying, "It's nice to know that love and truth prevailed tonight."
A Democratic politician and U.S. senator-elect from New Hampshire. He has represented the state's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House since 2019.
