6 people allegedly set up "sham marriages" to get green cards for undocumented immigrants
A marriage could cost a client as much as $40,000 under the scheme described by federal prosecutors in CBS Boston's report. Six people face charges over allegations that they organized sham marriages in Massachusetts to help undocumented immigrants obtain green cards.
WBZ-TV reporter Logan Hall traces an operation prosecutors say ran for more than a decade. The report includes evidence photographs presented at a Justice Department news conference and covert footage that prosecutors say shows discussion of keeping the arrangements hidden.
U.S. Attorney Leah Foley describes the alleged operation as a sophisticated business. She also says the investigation is continuing, warning of prosecution, denaturalization and deportation for people found to have obtained green cards or citizenship illegally. Two people facing charges decline to comment as they leave federal court.
The report drew about 47,000 views in its first seven hours, already far beyond CBS Boston's usual first-day audience for Shorts. The station also posted a separate follow-up report by Brandon Truitt on the federal charges.
