Obama says Trump objected to Cheesecake Factory, not Saddam comparison
WSB-TV's rally clip captures the former president defending the restaurant before turning the joke toward the cost of eating out.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 58,200 views a day, 26 times a normal first day on this channel (2,227).
Obama teases Trump about Cheesecake Factory
Barack Obama finds an unlikely distinction in the response to his White House decor joke: which half of the comparison caused offense.
Speaking in Clayton County, Georgia, he recalls comparing Donald Trump's White House to a Cheesecake Factory opened by Saddam Hussein. Obama then tells the crowd that, as he understands it, the restaurant reference was the part that upset the president.
WSB-TV's Short, "Obama teases Trump about Cheesecake Factory," drew roughly 56,000 views before its first day was over, far beyond the Atlanta station's usual audience for Shorts.
The clip includes Obama's defense of the chain, delivered through memories of meals out while raising his daughters. Chuck E. Cheese and California Pizza Kitchen also make his list. He is not, he insists, dismissing the places families enjoy.
Then he turns from restaurant decor to restaurant bills: "The real problem is prices have gotten so high, a lot of folks can barely afford to go out to eat."
Obama argues that the administration has focused on his joke rather than answering his criticism of tariffs and rising costs. WSB-TV's brief edit preserves that pivot, from a punchline about the White House to an argument about household budgets.
