"If there's any doubt, there's no doubt": pilots weigh the Florida Learjet's final flight

Former Navy fighter pilot Matthew "Whiz" Buckley and retired airline captain Steven Arroyo walk through ice, a stall and the decision to take off, while defending the young co-pilot against online claims.

  1. 0:33Radar graphics show storm weather and reported icing and turbulence before an extremely steep descent.
  2. 0:46Arroyo compares the descent rate, above 25,000 feet per minute, with a normal airliner's descent.
  3. 1:13Buckley explains high-altitude icing and argues that pilots should leave icing conditions rather than try to manage them.
  4. 2:08Arroyo explains how ice distorts a wing and causes an aerodynamic stall, recalling his own Boeing 727 experience.
  5. 3:25Buckley discusses pressure in corporate aviation to fly in bad weather, then sums up his rule: any doubt means no flight.
  6. 4:34Buckley defends 20-year-old co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras against misinformation spreading online.

More than three million people have now watched the New York Post's conversation with two veteran pilots about the Learjet 60 that crashed in Florida, killing all nine people aboard. The flight was headed from Austin to the Bahamas.

The video opens with a warning and with dashcam footage of the impact. Most of it, though, is explanation. Steven Arroyo, a retired commercial pilot and aviation safety expert, sets the jet's reported rate of descent, beyond 25,000 feet per minute, against an ordinary airliner's descent. "It is extreme," he says.

Matthew "Whiz" Buckley, a former Navy F/A-18 pilot who flew as a TOPGUN adversary, describes the freezing air at high altitude and offers the report's plainest rule: "You don't manage icing, you get out of icing." Arroyo then explains how ice can change a wing's shape until it stops producing lift. He calls that an aerodynamic stall and draws on his own experience in a Boeing 727.

Buckley also raises the pressure in corporate aviation to fly through bad weather. That point has become the most discussed theme in the comments, where pilots and other transport workers share their own experiences of being pushed to go. The comment section filled more than four times faster than on a usual first day.

The segment also turns to the 20-year-old co-pilot, Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, whom Buckley defends against misinformation spreading online. "That young lady was doing her job," he says. The report includes part of the cockpit radio exchange. Buckley advises viewers not to listen to it.

The Post also posted a separate report on officials' finding that pieces of the tail came off in midair, along with a Short of witnesses near the crash site. The cause has not been determined.
