'Well known' man loses injunction bid, but naming restrictions remain
Channel 4 News's Georgina Lee explains the temporary restrictions and why the broadcaster has switched off comments.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 172,802 views a day, 11 times a normal first day on this channel (16,180).
'Well known' man loses injunction case
The missing name in Channel 4 News's report is still protected by a court order. A High Court judge has refused a well-known man's bid to prevent publication of allegations of inappropriate behaviour, but temporary reporting restrictions remain while he considers an appeal.
FactCheck News Editor Georgina Lee explains that the case concerns proposed reporting by The Guardian and ITN, which produces Channel 4 News. The organisations gave the man a right of reply and contested his injunction application on public-interest grounds.
Lee draws an important distinction: this is a legal attempt to prevent publication, not an attempt to stop a criminal case becoming public. The allegations have been denied, and neither police nor the Crown Prosecution Service has announced criminal charges.
The Short, titled "'Well known' man loses injunction case", drew around 100,000 views in its first ten hours, an unusually fast start for the channel's Shorts.
Its explanation also reaches beyond newsrooms. Lee warns that online speculation carries legal risks while the restrictions remain. Channel 4 News has disabled comments on the video for that reason.
