Michael Mullins was cycling home from Stretford Grammar School when Simon Richardson hit him with a car and dragged him for more than a mile. Richardson has been sentenced to life imprisonment for his murder, with a minimum term of 25 years.
Manchester Evening News's report combines Mrs Justice Brunner's sentencing remarks with CCTV, police footage and photographs of Mullins. The judge describes Richardson's dangerous driving after the collision and rejects his arguments about lack of premeditation and remorse. She concludes that he must have known death was a virtual certainty, amounting to an intention to kill.
The report drew around 60,000 views in its first twelve hours, already far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for regular videos. The sentencing itself comes just past the four-and-a-half-minute mark.
Outside court, Detective Sergeant Tricia Solomon of Greater Manchester Police pays tribute to Mullins's family and thanks the bystanders who tried to help him. Her closing request turns attention back to the headteacher: "Finally, I'd like you all to remember Michael. Do not remember the offender who's been found guilty of his murder."
