Mayor Brandon Johnson faces ballot challenge, a first for a Chicago incumbent
NBC Chicago's Mary Ann Ahern lays out a hurdle Brandon Johnson must clear before voters can decide whether to return him to office: a Board of Elections hearing over his nominating petitions.
The challenge concerns whether the mayor submitted enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. Ahern reports that Johnson's campaign turned in more than 31,000 signatures, against a requirement of 12,500. Challengers argue that enough should be rejected to leave him below that threshold.
The objections include allegations of signatures from unregistered voters, underage signers and noncitizens. Those are the challengers' allegations, not findings by election officials. Rickey Hendon, a former state senator working for Willie Wilson's campaign, also questions photocopies and other material included in the submission.
The report drew about 61,000 views in its opening day, roughly twenty-five times NBC Chicago's usual audience for Shorts. Its subject is a procedural question with a direct consequence: whether a sitting mayor can appear on the ballot.
Johnson is not the only candidate facing scrutiny. Ahern also reports challenges involving Susana Mendoza, Bill Quinlan and John Kelly, with Kelly answering a residency objection. The mayor's team says it is confident in its signatures, and the report says hearing proceedings begin the following Monday.
