Bahamas-bound flight ends on a Greenacres street
NBC Chicago combines the pilot's mayday call, dashcam footage and roadside videos in its report on the crash that killed nine people.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 49,671 views a day, 22 times a normal first day on this channel (2,240).
Shocking footage shows moments before and after deadly private jet crash in Florida
A route map in NBC Chicago's report shows the journey the business jet was supposed to make: Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. Instead, the flight ended in Greenacres, in Florida's Palm Beach County.
The Short opens with the pilot reporting an emergency descent, followed by dashcam footage of the impact. Cellphone videos then show fire, smoke and wreckage on the street. The report says nine people died.
Before the crash, the pilots had reported turbulence, icing and precipitation. NBC News aviation analyst Jeff Guzzetti describes a loss of control and says he believes severe weather at the aircraft's altitude was involved. That is his assessment, not an established cause; the report says the FAA and NTSB are investigating.
The upload reached about 39,000 views in its first 15 hours, far beyond the usual early audience for NBC Chicago's Shorts.
