Big Lotion, tanning and the sunscreen doubters: Healthcare Triage pushes back
Dr. Aaron Carroll's one new episode drew close to 11,000 views on its first day, and its comments turned into a sun-safety swap from Saskatoon to Queensland.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Why Do Wellness Influencers Hate Sunscreen?
Dr. Aaron Carroll took on a very modern piece of health advice: the wellness influencers who say sunscreen is the real danger. "Why Do Wellness Influencers Hate Sunscreen?" was the channel's only upload of the week, and it carried it.
The description sets the tone with a joke about a supposed conspiracy between Big Lotion and the dermatology industrial complex, then points out that tanning is skin changing its biology after UV exposure, which we somehow decided counts as a beauty treatment. It also has no patience for the opposite camp, the people who treat sunscreen as armor for eight hours on a beach. Carroll wrote it with Tiffany Doherty, with Stan Muller directing and John Green among the producers.
The comments read like a field report from very different latitudes. Redheads say they always knew. An Australian explains how hard UV tanning is to do legally there, and another describes biking at first light to skip the sunscreen. A Saskatoon viewer likes it in winter mostly against wind burn, while people far north raise vitamin D. Others want a verdict on spray tans and UPF clothing, and one does the math on SPF 15 against SPF 30.
With one video in a week, the channel ran a little under its usual daily pace, and subscribers held at 447,000. Among health channels near its size most are running quieter than normal too, from BrainCraft to Medlife Crisis, while wikiHow and ADHD Love remain the big movers by a wide margin.

Things us gingers have always known. The sun is a deadly laser.
@joshkeppeler3349See it on YouTube5:40 😎The good thing about sunscreen in winter, is it helps block wind-burn! The bad thing, is I live in Saskatoon and need a face-mask anyways! 🥶

In Australia, tanning with high energy UV is illegal... low energy UV is effectively uselss for tanning, so effectively UV tanning is illegal.
@JoelReidSee it on YouTubeI kept waiting for the bad news about spray-on tans, apart from the reputation for orangeyness.
@roecocoaSee it on YouTubeMind you, some of us much further north are basically vitamin D-deficient most of the year. Still not an excuse for doing stupid things though.
@talideonSee it on YouTubeThanks as always for the great advice!
@felipen.2080See it on YouTubeGreat episode. I only wish there was a commentary or analysis of UPF rated clothing, which seems much more convenient compared to sunscreen.

Aaron Carroll wrote a book with a cheeky title about food. What is it called?
His book is "The Bad Food Bible: How and Why to Eat Sinfully", as the video's description notes.
