"Loved the outdoors. Loved fishing, hunting, everything about it." That is how Brian Schladweiler remembers his son in FOX6 News Milwaukee's report on a fatal motorcycle crash and the legal questions surrounding the hours before it.
Police say the 18-year-old was served beer by his mother, a bartender, before he died in the July crash in Muskego. Reporter Bret Lemoine's story includes bar surveillance footage showing her serving him, alongside interviews with his father and aunt, who want criminal charges brought.
The complication is Wisconsin's parental exception to its underage drinking laws. Defense attorney Jonathan LaVoy explains that the state allows parents to provide alcohol to their children, or permit others to do so, under its parental-accompaniment rules. That exception is central to the report's question about what charges could follow; the broadcast does not report a charging decision.
The video drew an estimated 94,000 views in its first day, compared with roughly 1,000 for the station's usual regular upload. But the substance of the report is the distinction between what relatives want and what authorities have decided.
Lemoine reports that the district attorney's office is reviewing submitted evidence. The bar also faces a municipal review of its liquor license.
