Father of young co-pilot in Florida jet crash speaks out
Alan Filgueiras remembers his daughter marveling that she could get paid to do something she loved. Flying was Natalia's passion, one her father had helped nurture, and NBC 6 South Florida's report shows photographs of them in the air together.
Natalia, the 20-year-old co-pilot killed alongside eight others in a Florida Learjet crash, is remembered through those shared experiences as well as her response to the emergency. Her father says he has repeatedly listened to her final radio transmissions, searching for answers and finding pride in how she handled the crisis.
"She showed me what it is to be a hero," he says at a press conference. He also describes the helplessness of hearing what she faced: "I wanted to be by her side inside the plane to help her."
Ari Odzer's report drew about 102,000 views in its first day, far beyond the station's usual audience for a regular upload. Its focus is a father's account of the person behind the cockpit recording, including her delight at turning flying into a career.
Reporting outside North Perry Airport, Odzer says the family is waiting for findings from the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation before deciding whether to pursue a lawsuit.
An independent US federal agency that investigates civil transportation accidents, including aviation crashes.
