David Muir's November 6 broadcast opens on a White House under pressure from two directions. Outside, Pierre Thomas reports, the Secret Service arrested an armed man sitting in a stolen vehicle near the complex. Inside, President Trump is replacing his chief of staff after the midterms.
Jonathan Karl's report carries the shake-up. Susie Wiles, the first woman to hold the job, is out. Stephen Miller is in. The program's own description calls Miller perhaps Trump's most controversial and combative adviser. He has been a top aide in both Trump administrations, as a speechwriter in the first and a deputy chief of staff in the second. Trump praises both of them on camera, and his instruction to the new chief of staff is four words long: "Just run things well." Karl also covers the possible impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and a court order halting Trump's arch project.
The full edition drew about 880,000 views in its first day. Its comment section filled more than twenty times faster than on a usual ABC upload, and much of the talk is about Miller's appointment. Many viewers also send condolences to the father of the co-pilot killed in a private jet crash in Palm Beach County. In Aaron Katersky's report he says of his daughter: "She showed me what it is to be a hero."
The busy day spread beyond the full edition. ABC's separate Shorts on the White House arrest and on new U.S. strikes in Iran also got off to unusually fast starts.
The newscast ends far from Washington. Giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang made their debut at Zoo Atlanta, and Leslie Lopez reports that big weekend crowds are expected in front of the enclosure.
