Pieces of the Learjet's left elevator were found miles from the main crash site, giving investigators evidence that some components separated before impact. NTSB board member Tom Chapman paired that finding with a request to the public: leave any suspected wreckage where it is and contact authorities.
NBC 6 South Florida carried the briefing on the Palm Beach County crash that killed nine people. The upload drew about 83,000 views in its first eight hours, far beyond the station's usual audience for a regular video.
Chapman said most of the left elevator had been located in three pieces. The discovery establishes that parts came off before the aircraft struck the ground, but does not by itself explain what caused the crash.
At the impact site, utility poles had been stabilized, and crews were preparing to remove water from the crater so investigators could reach debris inside.
The station's related reporting also included an update on the driver whose vehicle was near the crash. District 3 Commissioner Joel Flores said the driver was doing well and had suffered minor injuries when the airbags deployed.
Chapman said this would be the NTSB's last on-site briefing, with further updates to be issued online.
