U.S. and Cuba officials clash at UN; Cuban diplomat expelled before embargo vote
NBC 6 South Florida reporter Briana Nespral follows an embargo debate that breaks down into shouted demands, desk-pounding and a suspended UN General Assembly session.
At the podium, U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz tells an approaching official: "Back up, Ambassador. Back away. This isn't Havana." He refuses to yield, while Cuban delegates pound their desks in protest. The General Assembly president suspends proceedings.
The exchange comes during an address in which Waltz holds up a photograph of Fidel Castro wearing watches on both wrists and accuses the Cuban government of corruption. The report also includes phone footage of a separate confrontation, showing a Cuban diplomat gesturing and speaking in Spanish toward an American official who is recording him.
Nespral reports that the diplomat was expelled. In an interview excerpt, Waltz says he will be put on a flight to Havana within 24 hours.
The Short drew roughly 260,000 views in ten hours, far beyond NBC 6's usual first-day audience for that format.
Behind the confrontation is a distinction Nespral makes at the close: the embargo resolution is non-binding. A General Assembly vote condemning the restrictions does not itself remove them. NBC 6 has also posted Lorena Inclan's follow-up report on the vote, moving its coverage from the disrupted debate to the diplomatic outcome.
