Video taking off 24x its usual first day

E! News reports the death of an eight-year-old Japanese idol trainee

The short news item drew far more viewers in its first nine hours than the channel's videos usually gather in a full day, and its comments are almost all condolences.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 314,099 views a day, 24 times a normal first day on this channel (12,927).

A new E! News video usually ends its first day with around 13,000 views. Its report on the death of an eight-year-old Japanese pop performer had passed 175,000 within nine hours of going up.

The brief item, part of the channel's E! News Now series, reports that she had become known as a trainee member of DIANNA Project, a Japanese girls' idol group. According to the description, she died of myocarditis brought on by influenza.

The comment section is quiet and short. Nearly every message is a condolence, addressed to her family or simply wishing her rest, and a few viewers mention having watched her dance.

It was not the channel's only story to travel far on the same day. A very different item, Kathleen Turner's response after her "Romancing the Stone" costar Michael Douglas said the two had an affair while making the 1984 film, also ran well past the channel's usual first day. Beside them, most of E! News' other uploads from the weekend stayed in the low thousands.
