Simon's parents have a rule about bedroom doors, Jay's dad makes work experience considerably less welcoming, and Mr Gilbert struggles to keep a straight face. E4's "Over 20 minutes of The Inbetweeners adults making us laugh" puts the grown-ups at the centre of the embarrassment for a change.
The compilation's particular pleasure is that adulthood offers absolutely no guarantee of maturity. When Will's mum complains to Mr Gilbert about her son's work placement, the head of sixth form leaves the room to laugh. Greg Davies's imposing school authority is hardly a refuge from the parents outside it.
E4 posted nothing new this week, but that compilation is drawing around 4,000 views a day, more than twice the daily viewing of its school-years collection. The Neil and Jay compilation also remains among the channel's busiest older uploads. These are returning sitcom scenes, not new episodes, with three different edits offering a choice of where to start the awkwardness.
Across the channel, the week brought roughly 442,000 views, while subscribers remained unchanged. Daily viewing is currently below E4's usual level. Nearby television channels have had a livelier spell: Channel 4 and BBC Archive both drew substantially more weekly views and added subscribers.
For E4, the useful distinction within its familiar Inbetweeners selection is the adults' turn in the spotlight: Simon, Will, Jay and Neil aren't the only ones capable of making a room uncomfortable.
