Michael Douglas revisits Glenn Close's Fatal Attraction Oscar loss

An honorary Oscar announcement on Graham Norton's sofa prompts a joke about Close's losing streak and a pointed reminder about Cher.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 310,466 views a day, 22 times a normal first day on this channel (14,090).

Glenn Close has a reservation about finally receiving an Oscar: "I kind of hate to break my losing streak." Michael Douglas, sitting alongside her on Graham Norton's sofa, has a rather different response. He thinks she should already have won for Fatal Attraction.

The BBC Short drew around 232,000 views in 14 hours, far beyond the channel's usual pace for the format. Its comment section was also much busier than a typical first day, with viewers returning to Close's performances in Dangerous Liaisons, Albert Nobbs and 101 Dalmatians.

Norton opens by recalling her eight nominations without a win, then announces that she will receive an honorary Oscar next month. Close explains that the Academy's governors voted for the award, adding: "They probably don't want to feel guilty anymore."

Douglas takes the conversation back to Fatal Attraction, the thriller in which they starred together. He recalls that Cher won that year's award for Moonstruck, and his teasing earns a gentle intervention from Close: "Michael, be kind!" Kieran Culkin and Naomi Ackie laugh alongside them before Douglas praises Close's performance as one of the greatest.

Other moments from the same sofa are drawing unusually large audiences too: Ackie correcting her birthday after someone keeps changing it on Wikipedia, and Culkin displaying his Hunger Games knowledge.

For all the Oscar talk, Close supplies a revealing detail about those earlier ceremonies: she never wrote an acceptance speech, because the winners always seemed to say something better than she could have prepared.
