Glenn Close recalls her fight over Fatal Attraction's ending

A Graham Norton Show clip revisits the reshoot she resisted, and Michael Douglas's disarmingly blunt response.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 185,150 views a day, 13 times a normal first day on this channel (14,678).

Glenn Close wanted to protect Alex Forrest from the ending that would make Fatal Attraction famous. On Graham Norton's sofa, she recalls refusing to return for a reshoot that turned her character into a knife-wielding attacker.

The BBC's Short has drawn more than 90,000 views before its first day is over, already well beyond the roughly 15,000 its Shorts usually receive on a full opening day.

Close describes the original ending of the 1987 thriller as film noir: Alex dies by suicide, leaving a knife bearing the fingerprints of Michael Douglas's character, Dan, to implicate him. After American test audiences reacted angrily, she says, the studio wanted a different conclusion and called her back months later.

Her objection was about the character, not simply the inconvenience. She resisted having Alex attack Dan's wife, telling the filmmakers: "I'm not going to do it, she's not a psychopath."

Viewers are picking out Close's timing as she re-enacts the production meeting, while others argue that the original ending should have stayed. The clip gives that discussion an unexpectedly comic finish. Close recalls turning to Douglas and asking how he would feel if somebody did that to his character. His answer, as she tells it: "Babe, I'm a whore." The sofa dissolves into laughter.

  • I think that the ending works though in a way because it's still very clear that Dan brought this to their house.
