'Backbone' for Carney: Poilievre's letter sends Democracy Watch back to Canada
John Iadarola and Jayar Jackson read through the Conservative leader's list of Ottawa's concessions on The Damage Report, and Canadian viewers filled the comments.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 221,175 views a day, 20 times a normal first day on this channel (11,174).
Trump Outrage EXPLODES In Canada As Letter To Prime Minister Revealed
Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada's Conservatives, wrote to Prime Minister Mark Carney asking him to show some "backbone" in trade talks with the United States. A Damage Report segment about that letter is now the busiest upload on Democracy Watch. It passed 145,000 views in its first eleven hours, on a channel where a new video usually ends its whole first day near 11,000.
Democracy Watch reposts segments from The Young Turks network's shows, and Canada keeps coming back as a subject. Days ago, as we reported here, a Carney teleprompter quip carried another Damage Report clip far past its usual start. This one goes to the opposition side. John Iadarola and Jayar Jackson work through the letter itself, in which Poilievre and his Canada-U.S. relations critic, Shuvaloy Majumdar, list what they call Ottawa's concessions over the past year. Three are named: dropping the digital services tax, removing Canada's counter-tariffs, and giving the United States a share of net toll revenue from the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor and Detroit.
The comments arrived almost twenty times faster than on a usual first day. Much of the conversation, a lot of it from Canadian viewers, is about Poilievre and his standing at home more than about Trump. Others point to the trade agreement with Mexico and Canada that Trump signed in his first term.
A second Canada clip went up the same day, on Canadians making a quarter fewer trips to the United States in 2025, and it also ran well ahead of a usual start. The two arrived while the channel's overall daily views were running below their usual pace.
