Season 52 and the Alberta referendum: the fifth estate is back Oct. 8

Mark Kelley, Steven D'Souza and Ioanna Roumeliotis open the new season with the leaders and influencers trying to reshape Canada.

What does Canada's longest-running investigative program do before a new season? It tells you where it is starting. The fifth estate's only upload of the week is a short announcement, "We're back! Season 52 launches Oct. 8," and the first stop is the Alberta referendum, with the leaders and influencers the description says are seeking to reshape Canada as we know it.

The same three hosts return: Mark Kelley, Steven D'Souza and Ioanna Roumeliotis. One small change for online viewers is spelled out too: new episodes arrive on YouTube first, Thursdays at 7pm ET, a day before the Friday broadcast on CBC-TV.

While the trailer warms up, an older investigation keeps pulling its weight. "Inside the Trump-linked deal to secure Canadian resources," from March, follows an American firm with close ties to the Trump administration to a controlling stake in a large rare earth project in Canada. Written by D'Souza and produced by Scott Anderson, it has passed 300,000 views and still draws a steady daily crowd. Timothy Sawa's first episode on the disappearances in Dawson Creek, B.C., is also still finding viewers.

The channel as a whole ran a little above its usual daily pace, holding at a million subscribers. Among the documentary and journalism channels closest in size, it had the quietest week, while RocaNews and Channel 4 Documentaries drew the biggest crowds. For a program that does most of its talking on Friday nights, a quiet week before an opener is no surprise.
