A boat, a blockade and three books on Cuba hold Boy Boy's pause together
The three-month-old Cuba film has passed two and a half million views, and its description doubles as a reading list.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Can I Sneak This Boat Through A Military Blockade?
Boy Boy posted nothing new over the past seven days, and the channel did not seem to mind. Daily views ran a little above their usual level, and the week added close to 145,000 in total, all of it from older work.
Most of that came from "Can I Sneak This Boat Through A Military Blockade?", the duo's 95-day-old film about the American embargo on Cuba. It has passed two and a half million views, and it is the video drawing the biggest daily crowd. The description credits an animator named Zahra and closes with homework: Salim Lamrani's The Economic War Against Cuba as the overview, Jack Colhoun's Gangsterismo for the mob's long history on the island, and Helen Yaffe's We Are Cuba! for anyone the first two left feeling low.
Behind it sit two much older films. "We Tried Out CIA Torture Techniques" is the channel's look at the agency's enhanced interrogation program. "We Made Our Friend An International Fugitive" goes to Papua and the Grasberg mine, with a nod to Vincent Bevins' The Jakarta Method for viewers who want the Cold War background. Both are well over a year old and still bring in viewers every day.
Among the documentary and journalism channels around its size, Boy Boy had the smallest week. Brandon Buckingham is running at more than three times his usual pace, and NOVA PBS Official and Channel 4 Documentaries are busier than normal too. For a channel that posts rarely and goes long, a week carried by its back catalog is the expected rhythm.
