Four generations in Holmes County: RocaNews spends a day with the Yoders
Mike and Karen Yoder left the Amish faith, and the episode asks his mother, and his grandfather, what that choice did to the family.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Inside an Ohio Amish Family
Two episodes, two Americas. RocaNews, the news company founded in 2020 by friends who wanted to cover the news "without bias or fear," spent the week far from the headlines and inside other people's lives.
The newer one, episode 192, goes to Holmes County, Ohio, home to one of the largest Amish communities in the country. Mike Yoder's whole family is Amish; he and his wife Karen left the faith. The chapters move from horse and buggy and Pennsylvania Dutch to his mother's thoughts on his leaving, a grandfather asked about AI, and darker turns: a son who went to prison, a murder, and what happens when someone breaks the rules. It drew more than 150,000 views in its first day and is now the channel's quickest mover.
Episode 191 went to Atlanta, billed as home to the most Black millionaires in the country, with stops in Cascade Heights, on Auburn Avenue with an MLK historian, at a golf course and in Buckhead. Its comment section became a seminar of its own: many viewers say the episode missed the city's historically Black colleges, several thank former mayor Maynard Jackson, and others add their own city to the list.
Behind both, "The South's Most Notorious Prison (Angola)" keeps going. Ten days old and past a million views, it centers on Archie Williams, who spent 36 years inside before his exoneration.
The daily pace sits below the channel's usual, but among the documentary and journalism channels nearest its size, RocaNews gathered the most views of the week, about four million, ahead of Channel 4 Documentaries.

You missed the part where some of the most prestigious HBCUs are in Atlanta. The amount of Universities in Atlanta means there's a large segment of educated Black Americans

The Amish of Holmes County speak a language often called Pennsylvania Dutch. Which language is it actually a form of?
Pennsylvania Dutch descends from German dialects; 'Dutch' comes from the old word 'Deitsch' for German.
