"Welcome to the fat prison!" a staff member announces at intake, and Browney has not even unpacked. His bag is searched, some cookies are seized, and he tells the camera, a little pleased with himself, "He did not find everything."
The place in "I Survived China's Fat Loss Prison" is not a jail. It is a residential weight-loss boot camp behind gates and barbed wire, where people check in for months. Browney gives it 50 hours. His translator, Andy, reads out the rules, starting with the sign at the gate that bans outside food deliveries. For Stan Browney, whose channel took off with a month of 200 push-ups a day back in 2017, it is another round of living by someone else's regimen. This time the regimen comes with guards.
The video went up yesterday and passed a million views within 15 hours, around six times the start his longer videos usually get.
The schedule does the storytelling. There is aerobics on a stage, then a carefully measured cafeteria lunch, then a strength circuit led by trainer Hu Shibo. The evening ends in a spin class with nightclub lights and a DJ, where Browney is pushed to the front: "I'm put in front of the line, I have no clue what we're doing." At the second morning's weigh-in he reports, "I've lost 1.5 kg, 3 lbs so far," then talks over breakfast with Cindy, a 19-year-old attendee, about her goals. The video also carries a sponsored Gymshark segment.
Hu Shibo is the one viewers keep coming back to. Midway through the circuit Browney says, "I feel like I'm the only one doing a workout here together with him," and the most liked comment builds on that: a trainer who finally has a partner. Many others fix on the cost of a stay and call the room, meals and gym a bargain.
The last stretch takes a turn nobody planned. A stray cat outside scratches his finger, and suddenly rabies and a hospital visit are part of the challenge. "I didn't know it was a stray cat," he says. "I just thought it was a cat from here."
