Spain rail disaster
- Nippon TV reported at least 68 deaths in a high-speed train collision in Urda. Spain’s transport minister said a train required to remain stopped may have received incorrect permission to restart.
- An earlier report showed derailed carriages and stranded passengers in Madrid. A passenger described a train striking theirs from behind while they were stopped.
Winter and safety concerns
- ANNnewsCH, the TV Asahi-led network’s news channel, reported snow, power cuts and accidents in northern Japan. Rising winter tyre and kerosene prices complicated preparations.
- Nippon TV reported students’ skin discolouration after a science experiment in Kaga. The education board said inadequate cleaning after a chemical spill likely spread exposure; no other symptoms were reported.
- ANNnewsCH reported that outsiders accessed names and booking details for about 92,000 Japan Airlines customers through contractor Amadeus. All Nippon Airways was also checking possible exposure.
