Control of Congress is changing hands; control of the presidency is not. South Korea's YTN news channel examines that division of power after reporting Democratic victories in both chambers of the U.S. Congress midway through Donald Trump's second term.
Correspondent Lee Seung-yoon describes a result extending well beyond the closest battlegrounds. Citing CNN's election count, he reports Democrats securing 54 Senate seats and at least 231 House seats. Alaska remains unresolved in the broadcast, but no longer determines which party controls the Senate.
The report follows Democratic celebrations across Kansas, Texas, Ohio, Iowa, Maine and Michigan. It identifies Adam Hamilton's defeat of Republican incumbent Roger Marshall in Kansas and James Talarico's victory over Ken Paxton in Texas as particularly significant breaks with those states' Republican Senate traditions. In the House, the result opens a path for Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries to become the chamber's first Black speaker.
Hamilton supplies the report's clearest statement of voter frustration. "The chaos, the war that we didn't need, that's raised the prices for every Kansan," he says in the interview excerpt. He then adds: "We got to get back to kindness instead of cruelty."
YTN's explanation centers on household costs, including fuel prices and tariffs, alongside opposition to the administration's immigration enforcement. An on-screen exit-poll finding identifies the economy as respondents' leading concern. The broadcast presents these pressures as drivers of the Republican losses, rather than treating the result simply as enthusiasm for Democrats.
Trump, the report says, acknowledged the outcome and cited the Iran war and gasoline prices in his Fox News interview. But he also separated the candidates' losses from his own political standing, saying on social media that he would have won decisively had he been on the ballot.
His answer to a Democratic Congress includes a reminder of presidential authority: "It's the power of veto. It's one of the stronger powers that a president has." The broadcast closes by examining possible impeachment efforts and legislative confrontations, presenting them as potential consequences of divided government, not proceedings already underway.
