An assistant commandant and two constables were seriously injured when a crowd attacked Indian border guards in Tripura, vandalized their vehicle and seized their weapons, India's Zee News reports.

The report places the confrontation in Ashabari, near Boxanagar in Sepahijala district, following an operation along the India-Bangladesh border on November 2. Phone footage shows people surrounding and striking a Border Security Force vehicle. Separate images show masked suspects in custody.

Presenter Yudhishthir Upadhyay says personnel from the force's 49th Battalion spotted suspected contraband being moved across the border and detained a suspected smuggler after a chase. According to his account, a crowd armed with sticks and sharp weapons then attacked Assistant Commandant Rohit Kumar and two constables.

Tripura is in northeastern India, with Bangladesh bordering it to the north, south and west. The Border Security Force, commonly abbreviated to BSF, guards India's borders with Bangladesh and Pakistan.

The report displays a public statement from Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha condemning the attack and calling for strict action. Upadhyay says a joint nighttime search by state police and the border force resulted in nine arrests, including three women. Those detained are suspects; the arrests do not establish their guilt.
