North Korea enters the discussion as a warning, not an announced negotiation: could Donald Trump, blocked at home, offer major concessions abroad to secure a diplomatic achievement?

Japan's TBS NEWS DIG Powered by JNN raises that question in its Nスタ election analysis. Washington bureau chief Fumiaki Wakui warns that the search for a legacy could encourage dramatic deals after Democrats' projected capture of both chambers of Congress. The anchors pose a hypothetical involving recognition of North Korea's nuclear status in a deal with leader Kim Jong Un. The segment does not report that Trump has proposed such an arrangement.

The report begins with Democratic victories, including 's Senate win in Texas and 's in Michigan. Wakui describes Republican losses as substantially worse than pre-election expectations suggested.

Trump's own response is heard in audio from his Fox News phone interview: "Well, I'm a little bit surprised. I thought they'd do better." He also says, "I think a part of it was Iran."

For domestic policy, Wakui sees confrontation as more likely than compromise. Although the broadcast recounts Trump's suggestion that cooperation with Democrats is possible, it also highlights his promise to become "Mr Veto," blocking legislation he opposes. Budgets would still require agreement with Congress, making the legislative route narrower.

The studio also presents Sophia University professor Kazuhiro Maeshima's assessment that Democrats will pursue investigations into alleged administration misconduct, while attempts to constrain Trump through legislation will face obstacles.

Wakui interprets Trump's post-election focus on individual candidates as an effort to shift responsibility: during the campaign, Trump asked supporters to vote as though he were on the ballot; afterward, he emphasized that he wasn't. The foreign-policy question follows from that assessment: whether a president unwilling to change course domestically might seek a more consequential deal overseas.
