NBC's Maggie Vespa has a new report for TODAY on Cornell University's handling of a sexual assault case from 2024, and it is drawing far more viewers than the show's other uploads. Thirteen hours after it went up, "New Details Into Cornell University Gang Rape Investigation" had passed 50,000 views. That puts it on course for roughly eighteen times what a TODAY video usually gathers in its first day.

The report concerns the alleged assault of a female student by a group of fraternity members. Cornell, in Ithaca, New York, has faced criticism over how it handled the case. The new detail at the center of Vespa's piece is the university's own statement: campus police, it says, turned over all of the evidence to local prosecutors at the time.

The comments return to the same question of who handled the case. Many viewers ask why campus police were involved at all rather than the regular police. Several turn to the role of the local district attorney, and others raise consent and the place of fraternities on campus.

The report went up the same day as the show's lighter segments: Justin Verlander on his daughter's hug at his final game, a fall fashion guide for men, and two sisters who kept their family farm going with skyr. The busiest of those, the farm story, had about 11,000 views.
