A miniature copper-coloured still arrives on The TRY Channel's tasting table, complete with a working pouring tap. For a moment, the container is as much of an attraction as the whisky inside it.
That's the premise of "Irish People Try The Craziest Alcohol Bottles 2", which has drawn about 68,000 views in its first twelve hours. Following an earlier outing with fuel-can and dodo-shaped bottles, this edition brings golf equipment, bullion, an ape and an alien head to the drinks cabinet.
Nicole O'Connor, Pagan McGrath, Dermot Ward, Clisare, Darren Lalor and Gráinne Blumenthal taste in pairs. The golf-club-shaped whisky bottle gives Darren an opening for a verdict: "If anything, I'd say this one is a bit of a bogey." Viewers are picking up on the golf wordplay too, with some suggesting polite golf applause should accompany his puns.
The contents don't always match the novelty of the vessel. Clisare finds plenty to enjoy in the vanilla-spice flavour of the gold-bar rum. The popcorn vodka, meanwhile, sends the panel towards butter rather than the usual tasting vocabulary. "That is syrup," Darren says. Nicole's delivery of the word butter has even reminded viewers of old Parkay margarine commercials.
Then the tasting takes a linguistic detour. Dermot and Clisare debate what "nonplussed" actually means, before the green alien-head vodka opens a much bigger question: whether humans could really be the most advanced beings in the universe. Odd bottles turn out to hold quite a lot of conversation.
