"Martyre de l'A10" : le procès des parents de la petite Inass s'ouvre 39 ans après sa mort|TF1 INFO
A mother and father have gone on trial in Blois, central France, over the death of their young daughter nearly four decades ago, according to France's TF1 INFO.
The report shows the mother arriving concealed beneath her lawyer's robe. The father enters with a cane, wearing a mask and cap. Outside the courthouse, child-protection campaigners hold signs calling for justice and demand admissions from the defendants.
The broadcaster reports that the mother faces a charge of torture and acts of barbarity resulting in death without intent to kill, while the father is accused of complicity. Both face possible life imprisonment. The charges remain to be decided at trial.
The girl's body was discovered beside the A10 motorway in 1987. According to the report, she had suffered violence and burns, and her family had not reported her missing. She was buried without being identified, and the local community maintained her grave.
The breakthrough came in 2018. The broadcaster says a relative's arrest allowed investigators to make a DNA connection with the blanket wrapped around the body, finally establishing the girl's identity.
The parents were briefly held in custody that year but are appearing at trial out of detention, the report says. A former local deputy mayor, speaking outside court, calls for a firm sentence. The proceedings are expected to last two weeks.
