Haley Stevens' backlash 'has enraged people'
At a United Auto Workers unity rally, union director LaShawn English had a message for Haley Stevens, according to Michigan state Senator Mallory McMorrow: she had turned her back on people who helped her.
McMorrow recounts that encounter in an interview with the United States' Cable News Network (CNN), offering a ground-level account of the reaction to Stevens' endorsement of Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers. Stevens, a Democratic congresswoman, lost her party's Senate nomination to Abdul El-Sayed before backing his opponent.
Anderson Cooper asks whether some voters who supported Stevens in the primary might follow her lead. McMorrow rejects that possibility: "I don't. I don't think this changes the dynamic at all. If anything, it has enraged people."
Her examples extend beyond the union rally. McMorrow describes attending church services with fellow leaders and hearing from former Stevens supporters angry that they had trusted, donated to and voted for her. She says the endorsement has galvanized Democrats and undecided voters rather than drawn them toward Rogers.
That is McMorrow's assessment of the people she is hearing from, not an election result. She connects their reaction to a larger electoral goal: supporting El-Sayed in a state she says could send the decisive 51st Democrat to the Senate.
