Bagha Jatin, the Bengal revolutionary named for a tiger, in a Sham Sharma short

Viewers from Karnataka to Kolkata wrote in, some to say they had never heard of him, others to name the forgotten fighter they want covered next.

Why this story? The video drew 530 comments in its first day, 6 times a normal first day on this channel (88).

A history lesson, this time. Most of what Sham Sharma has posted lately follows the news of the week: the arguments around Captain Smit Machchhar after the Flydubai incident, a jab at Ravish Kumar, a short on the BJP IT cell. Then came "Most Underated Freedom Fighter | Bhaga Jathin", a short about Jatindranath Mukherjee, better known as Bagha Jatin.

Its first-day views were about what a short here usually gets, a little over 110,000. The conversation was another matter: roughly 530 comments in 24 hours, about six times a typical short's first day.

Bagha Jatin was one of Bengal's revolutionaries of the early 1900s and a leading figure of the Jugantar group. The nickname means tiger. As a young man he fought one with little more than a dagger and killed it, a story one commenter retells for anyone who missed it.

The thread reads like a mix of discovery and roll call. Several viewers, one of them writing from Karnataka, say they learned his name only today. A viewer from Kolkata points out that a part of the city carries it. The most liked comment says Bengal produced more revolutionaries than anyone could count, and others answer with the names they want next: Rash Behari Bose, Shyamji Krishna Varma, Swami Vivekananda. One viewer says the Bengali line quoted in the short sent a chill down their spine.

The request that keeps coming back is for more of the same from Sham Sharma: a long-form video, because a short cannot hold the whole story, and a series on other revolutionaries like him.
