Work rules to age 64 and food banks stretched thin: Roland Martin's SNAP segment
Two food-aid experts walk through the new rules, and the comment section filled about eight times faster than a usual first day.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 103,616 views a day, 15 times a normal first day on this channel (6,713).
SNAP BENEFITS CRISIS! 5M+ Already Lost Benefits. New Rules Put Millions More At Risk
More than five million people have already lost SNAP benefits, two million of them children, according to the segment's opening claim. The clip Roland Martin's show built around that figure passed 67,000 views in its first eleven hours. On a channel where a regular segment usually ends its whole first day in the low thousands, that is a different kind of start.
The segment, from the daily show Martin broadcasts out of Washington, is mostly a walk through the rules. Ty Jones Cox of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities explains the changes as the description lays them out. Work requirements now reach adults up to 64 without dependents, at 80 hours of work or education a month. Parents lose their exemption once the youngest child turns 14, and some immigrant groups lose eligibility. States now carry three quarters of the program's administrative costs instead of half, more cost shifts are due in 2027, and Cox says four states in one survey worried they might have to leave SNAP altogether.
Dr. Leeja Carter of the Coalition for Food and Health Equity takes the other half: why food pantries cannot fill the gap. She describes them as becoming "the safety net to the safety net," and the conversation turns to food cooperatives, urban farming and community grocery models.
The comments came in about eight times faster than on a usual first day. Many are about older people who can no longer work, children and people with disabilities. Others raise the midterms. One viewer describes church food baskets stocked by families who are themselves on fixed incomes, the same strain Carter describes from the other side of the counter.
