FAMU students question Byron Donalds, and Roland Martin answers his pitch
Eleven hours in, the segment had drawn far more viewers than anything else the daily show posted, and its comment section filled faster still, much of it circling back to one student's question about education.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 259,397 views a day, 36 times a normal first day on this channel (7,098).
BYRON DONALDS GOT COOKED AT FAMU! Black Students Grill Him, Roland Brings the Receipts
Byron Donalds, the Florida congressman running for governor as the Republican nominee, took questions at a town hall at Florida A&M University, the historically Black university in Tallahassee. Roland Martin built a segment around it, and that segment is now carrying his channel.
Eleven hours after it went up, "BYRON DONALDS GOT COOKED AT FAMU! Black Students Grill Him, Roland Brings the Receipts" had passed 167,000 views. A usual first day for a regular upload on Roland Martin Unfiltered ends at a few thousand. It follows the Jack Smith hearing clip, which also ran far ahead of the channel's norm a day earlier.
The description lists what the students raised: education, gun rights, diversity policies, immigration enforcement and political participation. Donalds told the audience to stop voting "like a monolith" and asked whether Democrats had delivered for Black voters. Martin takes that argument apart point by point, asking which promises Donalds means and walking through how Black voters weighed Jesse Jackson's campaigns, Barack Obama in 2008 and the 2020 primary. He invokes Ella Baker and SNCC, and he invites Donalds onto the show to answer for himself.
The comments arrived more than twenty times faster than on a usual first day. Many go back to one exchange, a student asking what Donalds would do on education as governor, and argue over whether the answer said anything.
The same day, a conversation with researcher Dr. Brittani Williams about a proposed student loan rule that could cut federal aid to some college programs also ran well ahead of a usual start, a second education story finding its audience.
