South Park on the N64, and 80s Amanda behind the counter at Secret Castle
A customer's question about Nintendo 64 South Park games led five shorts from the Owensboro, Kentucky store, and a taped-up Steel Battalion box came close to 100,000 views in twelve hours.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
Anybody have any South Park games for N64?
Secret Castle Toys and Games is a retro game store in Owensboro, Kentucky, and its shorts are built from the counter: trade-ins, odd questions, staff teasing each other. Five went up this week, and the most watched opens with a plain request: "Anybody have any South Park games for N64?" It has passed a quarter of a million views.
The comment section is less about South Park than about Amanda. Viewers puzzle over why she is called "80s Amanda" and settle on her hairdo, catch her laughing behind the camera and spot a Greenville, South Carolina sweatshirt, which brought a few locals out to say that is their town. A Jungle Book Happy Meal toy on screen stirred up childhood memories, and a couple of N64 owners report they still have their copies of the game.
The newer shorts are picking up speed. "Removing tape from a Steel Battalion Controller box" opens a box for Capcom's famously huge Xbox mech game, sold with its own giant controller, and it came close to 100,000 views in its first twelve hours. A day earlier, "Is a woman working in a video game store if no one acknowledges her?" made another bit out of the staff's routine. Older favorites keep working too: "How to find your short coworker," posted sixteen days ago, has passed six million.
Views ran a little below the channel's usual pace, but its 10 million for the week were the most among the gaming channels near its size, ahead of the steady climbs at Scott's Stash and Mind Pulp. About 5,000 new subscribers brought the store to 596,000.
