Ten hurt at a Newcastle Knights sendoff, and the Flydubai co-pilot question
An SBS News bulletin paired a crash in Wallsend on the eve of the NRL Grand Final with the federal police inquiry into Flight FZ1073.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 203,642 views a day, 46 times a normal first day on this channel (4,399).
Car crashes into Newcastle NRL fans, 10 hurt | Did the FlyDubai co-pilot have links to Australia?
Two stories, one bulletin. SBS News put a crash in Newcastle and a question about Flight FZ1073 under a single title, and within 19 hours the video had passed 180,000 views, far beyond what a new upload on this channel usually draws in a whole day.
The crash comes first. Thousands of people had lined the streets of Wallsend, in Newcastle's west, to send the Knights team bus off to Sydney for Sunday's NRL Grand Final when a car went into the crowd. Ten people were hurt, and children are among them. The channel also posted a separate report built around the police briefing, which says a young driver on P-plates was arrested and that police do not believe the crowd was targeted. That video ran about ten times ahead of a usual first day as well. The bus was sent another way, and the team left for Sydney.
The second segment goes back to Flydubai flight FZ1073, which we covered as we reported here. The Australian Federal Police are now looking into whether the co-pilot at the center of the case had links to Australia. Around those two stories, the bulletin moves through the G7's plan to release diesel from emergency reserves, Russian strikes on bridges in Kyiv, a North Korean missile launch, and protests in India and France.
The comment section filled several times faster than on a usual first day. The most liked comments hope that the two people in critical condition pull through, and many viewers ask for more about the driver than the report gives.

The numbers
This bulletin started far faster than a typical SBS News upload, and the stand-alone crash report also outpaced the channel's usual first day.
