David S. Pumpkins is back. Tom Hanks put on the pumpkin-patterned suit again for SNL's cold open, which has drawn about 3.3 million views in its first day.

The setting is a theme-park ride called The Tombs of Doom. Kenan Thompson is its ghoulish guide, and Jeremy Culhane and Grace Reiter are the riders in the cart. The first tomb holds a staged Lizzie Borden scene, which works roughly the way a horror ride should. The second holds Hanks, dancing between two skeletons, one of them former cast member Bobby Moynihan. The riders want to know who exactly this is supposed to be. The answer is that he is his own thing: "A Halloween guy!"

Then James Austin Johnson walks in as Donald Trump, and the ride turns into a midterms monologue. His Trump finds a kindred spirit in Pumpkins: both turned up in 2016, and both are loud and orange. Later a Nicki Minaj in a Gucci suit pitches herself as his next press secretary, and a Kayleigh McEnany reaches for the show's famous opening line before Trump cuts her off. In the end the line goes to Hanks and his skeletons.

For much of that stretch, Hanks simply stands frozen behind Johnson, and that stillness is what viewers keep bringing up: a two-time Oscar winner coming back for a few lines and a very long pose. Moynihan's return gets nearly as much attention, and the comments arrived about six times faster than on a usual first day for the channel.

Moynihan's night may not have ended with the skeleton costume. Another new clip on the channel is titled "drunk uncle gets some things off his chest," a nod to the Weekend Update character he made his own.

  • For those who haven't figured this out yet, Tom Hanks isn't reprising this role out of the goodness of his heart. He's been cursed by a magic pumpkin and is now David S Pumpkins and must return to SNL every 4-6 years for a Halloween sketch. The curse isn't lifted until a child smashes the magic pumpkin on All Hallow's Eve, but the pumpkin is heald in a hidden vault by Lorne Michaels.
