GMA reports calmer French marches amid Europe's cost-of-living protests
Tom Soufi Burridge's Paris report distinguishes peaceful demonstrations from clashes as French officials put turnout above 300,000.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 125,455 views a day, 30 times a normal first day on this channel (4,193).
Social unrest fueling protests across Europe
The pressure on household budgets is the thread connecting Good Morning America's short report from Europe's protest-filled streets. Reporting from Paris, ABC News correspondent Tom Soufi Burridge describes another weekend of demonstrations across France, Germany and Italy, with sharply different scenes along the routes.
French officials put turnout at more than 300,000 across multiple cities. The report shows peaceful marches alongside confrontations between police and what Burridge describes as a violent minority. He also reports hundreds of arrests across France.
In Germany, the focus turns to youth-led demonstrations and footage of clashes and vandalism in Hamburg. In Italy, Burridge covers protests in Genoa following a general strike. French unions, he adds, have called a strike for Thursday.
The upload, titled "Social unrest fueling protests across Europe", reached about 83,000 views in less than half a day, already far beyond GMA's usual first-day audience for Shorts. Two other reports also drew unusually fast starts: Donald Trump's Sunday campaign rallies and Alex Presha's examination of inflation as a midterm voting issue. Household costs feature in both the European protest coverage and the American election discussion.
Burridge's closing distinction is important amid the footage of confrontations: France's demonstrations were much calmer than the extreme violence seen two weeks earlier.
