"Do you believe that actions have consequences?" a man asks in Criminal's teaser. Police cars and masked shooters soon give that question an ominous setting.

Prime Video's adaptation of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips's crime comics arrives in two parts: Coward on January 13 and Lawless on January 27. The teaser gives each its own introduction, pairing Charlie Hunnam with Adria Arjona for Coward before turning to Luke Evans and Emilia Clarke for Lawless.

Between the phone-booth call at the opening and the revolver near the end, there are robberies, street fights and car chases. The preview offers flashes of danger rather than a detailed explanation of how its characters connect. That fits the source material's territory: interconnected crime stories whose characters live with the consequences of their choices.

The teaser has drawn more than 420,000 views in its first 13 hours, an unusually fast start for a short upload on Prime Video's channel. Its comment section is already far busier than the channel's usual full first day.

Much of that conversation has two distinct starting points. Some viewers are listing the ensemble, including Garrett Hedlund, John Hawkes and Richard Jenkins. Others are arriving as comics readers, singling out Brubaker and wishing their friends had read Criminal too. One viewer finds a different point of recognition in Jenkins: the dad from Step Brothers.
