Who owns a city street? In Clearwater, Florida, that question has become a local fight, and Charlie White, better known as penguinz0, has picked his side in "Scientology is Fighting My Neighbors."
He introduces Clearwater as a neighboring city and explains why the dispute is happening there: the town is the headquarters of the Church of Scientology, which has been trying to turn public streets over to its own use. "There has been a feud where they are trying to take public roads for themselves," he says.
The road in question is Garden Avenue. In a clip from a press event held by Save The Garden, a group of locals organized against the closures, a speaker explains that the city council voted 3-2 to vacate the street to the church. Residents are now using a referendum petition to challenge that ordinance. Charlie also shows reporting on a planned $50 million entertainment complex backed by Scientology that would need more streets closed, the point behind his warning: "You give an inch, they'll take a mile."
His own objection is practical. Clearwater traffic is already bad, he argues, and its connecting roads cannot spare one: "Every street that connects in Clearwater is extraordinarily like all of it is load-bearing." He finds an ally in Mayor Bruce Rector, whose statement against the privatization he reads aloud: "The citizens of the city of Clearwater own that street." The church's side appears through an article excerpt quoting its spokesperson, Erin Banks.
It is commentary rather than reporting, and Charlie says so plainly at the end: "I'm hoping the residents win." Beneath it, the comments circle the church's tax-exempt status and the idea of selling a road paid for with public money, with several viewers saying they live in Clearwater themselves.
