Robert Pape does not rely on talk alone. In his conversation with Steven Bartlett on The Diary Of A CEO he works from a timeline board, stacks roulette chips on the desk and, near the hour mark, sets a small pile of kindling alight.
The board carries the title's promise: eight weeks after the US midterms in which, Pape argues, tension at home and war abroad converge. The episode was recorded on 29 October, before the vote, so it is a forecast rather than a reading of the results. An on-screen note added since mentions US strikes on Iranian targets.
His central idea is the "escalation trap". A strong country attacks a weaker one and wins tactically, but the political goal does not follow, so its leaders raise the stakes. "International politics, especially when a strong power is ahead, is not a chess game," he says. His comparison is roulette and a gambler chasing losses. Pape adds that presidents do not simply abandon their party, their agenda and their legacy.
His concrete case is a proposed three-day air campaign against Iran, which he sets beside Operation Instant Thunder, the 1991 Gulf War plan. "This is much more than the word 'three days' would communicate," he says. Knocking out Iran's command structure, he argues, could also remove the people needed to negotiate an end, and he warns of retaliation against civilian aviation and airports.
At home, Pape cites surveys showing tens of millions of Americans backing the use of force in politics, and calls the transfer of power "the most dangerous time". The burning kindling is his picture of that: combustible material waiting for a spark, with January 6 as his reference point. His answer is a "firebreak" built before the next fire, and later chapters turn it into demands on politicians and the public, with a stop at the Insurrection Act.
Ukraine gets its own stretch. Pape argues that Putin wants full control of the annexed regions rather than a photo opportunity, and he expects winter attacks on Ukraine's power grid.
The episode is the latest in a run on Bartlett's channel that keeps returning to the Iran war, following his conversations with Sarah Paine and James Talarico.
